When Your Child Considers Suicide
by Jennifer Hoffman
===============================
One of the early articles I wrote about Indigos addressed the issue of suicide, because
it is such a powerful and painful issue that has marked this generation. I have a personal experience of that and although
my child did not actually commit suicide, I knew that it was something he considered and lived each day wondering whether
that would be the day I came home and found that he had gone through with it. This was a constant threat for over three long
years and although it didn't happen, knowing that my child was in a space where I couldn't reach him, that I was powerless
to convince him that he had much to live for, that I had to stand aside and wait until he made the decision to stay.
Having a child commit suicide is a parent's greatest pain and my son later admitted to
me that I was the reason he didn't take that final step. I was committed to his success, serious about ensuring that he could
find a way to feel comfortable in his life and was there for him as much as I could be. But I also maintained strong lines
of communication with my children beginning with their early years. Communication is so important with Indigos because even
if they do not appear to be listening, they are and even then it may take a while for them to respond.
But what can you do to help yourself and them through this crisis? I had to make peace
with my son's choices, even though it would have broken my heart to lose him, I reached a point where I did all I could and
had that discussion with him. No matter how much I loved him, he had to learn to love himself and let his self love, instead
of his fear, doubt and feelings of unworthiness, create his choices.
I hear from many parents who struggle with this, some write that their child is gone and
these messages have helped them deal with their pain. Others have a difficult child and can't do anything else for them. They
are afraid that each day will be their child's last. And there are some who are in an in-between place where their struggle
is just beginning. No matter where you are with your children, you agreed to bring them into the world and be their parent,
to love them and to do your best. Whatever your child does is not a reflection on you, it is a choice they made and they will
make a decision to stay or go based on their needs. You can be alert to the fact that suicide is an issue many Indigos consider,
whether they complete it or not, and they must choose to stay because it is what they want for themselves. There is no quick
fix, easy way out, shortcut or cure-all for this situation. It is heart-breaking, scary and frustrating and all you can do
is remind your children that you love them and find the strength within yourself to move forward from one day to the next,
and know that you have done your best for them.
