Uncommon Sense & CLEVELAND
Mark Twain believed that Cleveland would
be the ideal place to call home. Twain was so smitten by the city that he made a strong bid to settle here and
tried to buy into the then Cleveland Herald newspaper as an editor and partner. The asking price was too high,
however, and Twain instead became editor and part-owner of the Buffalo {N.Y.} Express. But Cleveland continued
to ride high in his affections.

Cleveland rules the land in plenty of other things
as well, to name just a few - Cleveland has a long history of tolerance, just check our time-line, we honor all.
Cleveland Ranks Among The Top As Being The Most Generous City In The USA. Cleveland: A City that has always
been, > more 'HEART' then 'HEAD'. Cleveland's backbone is much more than a "degree" , - it is a city of ordinary
average normal hard working folks with big hearts, who use commonsense - native good judgment - and a well-balanced
approach to life,- degrees were never necessary, and I pray that they never are - it was character {not education} that
built our city, and character "not education" is man's greatest need and man's greatest safeguard. To give is to
receive: Cleveland, one of 6 of the most-generous city in America, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, which
figured out that we donate 9.4 cents of every discretionary dollar to charitable causes. CLEVELAND & the
UNITED WAY - The nation's first modern Community Chest was born in Cleveland, where a program for allocating
campaign funds was developed. Cleveland earned a national reputation for innovation in organized philanthropy. In
the early years, civic leaders organized agencies to address emerging social issues. Increasing specialization in fields
such as law, medicine, and the fine arts resulted in tremendous growth in private giving. The first sustained campaign
in the United States to raise funds for multiple charitable organizations regardless of religious sponsorship
occurred in Cleveland. The Cleveland Foundation, also created at this time, premiered the concept of the community foundation.
The first healthcare conversion foundation in the United States was established in Cleveland. Cleveland
Child Health Association established as one of the most successful health and child welfare programs in the United States,
- and the list goes on ... "People in the Greater Cleveland area have a history of generous giving. We have
raised more money in this diocese than any other (Catholic) Charities in the United States,'' said Mullen. - J.Thomas
Mullen, served as president and CEO of Catholic Charities in Cleveland. The Cleveland Area: "The library capital
of America." No less than a dozen local libraries and systems rank in the top 10 in their population categories,
according to Hennen's American Public Library Ratings. The crown jewel, of course, is the Cleveland Public Library,
the third-largest public research institution in the country. It was one of the first libraries to open its shelves
to the public, one of the first to have a female director and the first to offer e-books to patrons. Awake
& Wired: Degrees were never necessary in Cleveland, personal growth is, we are not interested in telling the world
that we "officially" possess knowledge with a "degree", love of learning and books were always one of our main interest
{see above}- we educate ourselves, - we care nothing for ranking - pedigree or degrees, although we honor them,
they do not mean anything at all, they do not make a person more human, or can they ever make one "love more" - we weigh
the man, not their title or credentials, that is why we are one of the most generous cities in America, if not
the most generous ...
Cleveland has been called a city of contradictions.
Although a sprawling metropolis, it retains the friendliness of a small town. Its modern population represents most of the
world's major religions and at least 50 ethnic groups. Cleveland, once considered an industrial, blue-collar city, has built
an enviable reputation for its world-class cultural, educational and medical institutions.
Tourism is also a major local industry, as Cleveland
receives approximately eight million visitors annually. Recently Travel and Leisure magazine named Cleveland one of the top
international visitor hotspots. The Cleveland Indians, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, the Cuyahoga Valley National
Park, and the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra are just a sampling of attractions that draw visitors to the area.
Culture Clevelanders are also enjoying the
city's cultural renaissance. University Circle, on Cleveland's east side, is the cultural/educational center of Northeast
Ohio. This single square mile on Cleveland's East Side is often described as the greatest concentration of cultural and educational
institutions in the world--a modern-day Athens. It is the location of 75 institutions including: Severance Hall, home of The
Cleveland Orchestra; The Cleveland Museum of Art; The Cleveland Museum of Natural History; University Hospitals of Cleveland;
Case Western Reserve University; The Cleveland Institute of Music; The Cleveland Institute of Art; and The Children's Museum
of Cleveland, to name just a few.
Live theatre is an integral part of the Cleveland
experience. Playhouse Square Center is composed of five historic playhouses: Ohio, State, Palace, Allen and Hanna theatres.
The renovation of these venues became the largest theatre renovation project in the world. With a seating capacity of
over 10,000, Playhouse Square attracts one million patrons a year, and is the nation's second-largest performing arts district.
Just east of downtown lies The Cleveland Play House. Founded in 1915, it is the country's longest running regional theatre,
specializing in repertory theater, children's theater, and new plays.
Recreation Cleveland's Metroparks, nicknamed
the "Emerald Necklace" is the country's largest city parks system offering horseback riding, hiking, cycling, golfing plus
one of the nation's best zoos. Cuyahoga Valley National Park, located primarily in Summit County, south of the city, has over
125 miles of trails, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and a hiking/biking Tow Path trail along the Ohio & Erie Canal.
No matter where you are in Greater Cleveland, the great outdoors are just minutes away. With an annual catch of more than
25 million fish, Lake Erie is considered "Walleye Capital of the World." Easy access to Lake Erie attracts boat owners and
water sports enthusiasts. Northeast Ohio is home to Cedar Point and Six Flags amusement parks, and horse racing fans can
enjoy Northfield Park and Thistledown race tracks.
Nightlife Cleveland's nightlife has vastly
improved during the past few decades and now boasts several niches of dining and entertainment venues. The restoration of
the Flats, which became the hub of Cleveland's nightlife, resulted in a slew of new restaurants and dance clubs, many with
outdoor patios overlooking the Cuyahoga River. Where East 9th Street meets Lake Erie, you will find Cleveland's North Coast
Harbor Area, home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and the Great Lakes Science Center. The Gateway area's proximity
to Jacobs Field and Gund Arena makes it a favorite for sports fans, and the renovated buildings in the Historic Warehouse
District make it the perfect place for many of the city's trendy new restaurants. Overall, world-class culture and entertainment,
a thriving economy and revitalized downtown area, plus access to eminent health care and educational institutions make Cleveland
an exciting place to live, work, and play.
