*** Meditation ***
What is meditation?
Meditation is a purposeful
quieting and calming of the mind and body. It allows you to center yourself, relieves stress and rejuvenates the body.
Why meditate?
Before you begin, you might like to think about your reasons for meditating. Perhaps it
is to improve your health, to gain mental clarity and focus, or for spiritual enlightenment.
Where to begin?
Many people choose to begin their period of meditation with a prayer and prana breathing to center and focus the
meditation. It is often said that prayer is the asking and meditation is the listening for the answers to those prayers.
Posture counts!
There are various ways to sit for meditation, but in all postures it is important that
you are sitting comfortably with your back straight. In certain types of yoga, meditation is practiced with the legs
crossed, or it may be easier and more comfortable for you to sit with your feet flat on the floor with your hands
in your lap.
Let's begin!
Begin to meditate by closing your eyes and focusing your attention on your breath.
Prana breathing is very good here, since it helps you to center and to relax. As you breathe deeply, you will begin
to feel a sense of calm and peace. Imagine a beautiful golden light from the Creator's essence entering through the
top of your head. As you inhale this light, allow it to fill your whole body.
If you like, you can also focus
on a particular thought or visualization. For example, focusing on the thought of unconditional love or peace. You
might visualize the light of a candle or a place that you find very peaceful, such as a forest or at the beach. As
your breathing slows, you will begin to feel an inner peace envelop you.
What to do about those thoughts that
just won't go away!
It is normal for your thoughts to be scattered and to have a "busy mind" when you begin
to practice meditation. When random thoughts pop into your consciousness, acknowledge these thoughts and move back
to your focus. Be patient with yourself! With practice this will become less and less of a problem.
Commit yourself
to a specific period of time daily to meditate. Begin with 10 minutes and gradually increase the amount of time as
you become more comfortable with meditating. It also helps to meditate in a specific place at about the same time(s)
each day, for example, early morning after rising and before you go to sleep.
Soon you will begin to look forward
to your meditations as a time of great relaxation, peace and a way to tap into your inner guidance. ***
