Taking Back the World?
by Jennifer Hoffman
====================

'Occupy Wall Street' has grown into a global movement whose members have suddenly realized the cost of giving away their power, which has been the social paradigm for many centuries. Now they want to take their power back but there is another issue that has to be addressed and that is creating a new social paradigm because the world as it exists is set up with two groups, the group with the money and power and the group that has little money and who give up their power in exchange for being taken care of. All of our governments and social systems are set up this way so there is no way to 'take back the world', because we have to create a new kind of operating system for the world that allows everyone to be in their power.

There is a growing realization in the world that we are not truly in control of our lives, and we are not. We have, through mutual agreement, given our power over to governments and social structures that make our lives easier. And there is much benefit from the way they have organized our societies. We have roads, bridges, running water, electricity, communities, food distribution and more. That is not to say these things were done with altruistic and generous motives, and many were not. But they do exist and we benefit from them. If we destroy this paradigm, then we also destroy all we benefit from and I, for one, enjoy having running water, electricity and roads to drive on.

So if we are to take back the world, we have to consider how we will continue to enjoy the benefits we have while becoming more powerful in how we live our lives. And there is a way that each of us can begin that right now. I recently had a session with a client who is very unhappy, unfulfilled and afraid. Not because she has nothing to build her life with, but because she is afraid to move in any direction. And while the fear of being homeless is very strong, it is not so strong that she is willing to move beyond her fear to take steps to change her life, even when she knows that by doing nothing she risks being homeless. So she is stuck, afraid and hoping that someone will rescue her.

Once the pain of staying where we are becomes greater than our fear of change, we will step into new directions. But until then, we will stay where we are, no matter how uncomfortable that place is. We need to take back the world by taking back our own world. Where are we giving our power away to a fear, a doubt or lack of self worth? Where are we not giving ourselves the chance to use our gifts to create our own financial support structure? There may be fewer jobs but we aren't any less gifted or talented, so what are we doing to step into our power and create our own financial support system? If we want to be more powerful in the world, we have to be more powerful within ourselves and when we do that we also create a better, more equitable and more powerful world for everyone.
